Students are required to read approximately two books outside of class each quarter.
After completion of reading, the student is additionally required to submit a minimum of
one book report and one project each quarter. There will be a total of four book reports
and projects for the year, in addition to the three district-assigned novels. The other
four books require no formal book report or project, but do require formal notification to
the teacher. Deadline dates will be provided by the teacher each quarter. All reports and
projects are due prior to the deadline. Deadline dates are not the dates that reports are
due, but the very last date any report will be accepted for credit. It is suggested that
students not wait until the last possible minute as sometimes unforeseen personal and
school circumstances arise.
Student reports must be about books that contain the five literary elements. Everyone
will present the standard book report format (five literary elements: setting, plot,
theme, character portrayals with analysis, and evaluation) whether the report is presented
in written or in oral form. Out of the four, formal reports, two must be written and two
must be oral.
Each book report and accompanying project is worth 150 points. They will be graded on
the basis of effort, completeness, neatness, content, originality, and creativity for the
presentation of the five literary elements and the project. Each book not requiring a
formal book report and project will be worth 50 points. All books to be used for book
reports must be from the posted reading list or approved by the teacher prior to reading
and recording in the student's assignment book. Deadline dates will be assigned for this
process in order to allow adequate time for reading and the preparation of the reports and
projects. If you have any questions, talk with me!
