Frisbie Readers' Quilt

Background

Throughout the American past, quilting has been many things and served many purposes: a reason for a social gathering, a commemoration of major life events, a collection of group, family and individual histories. The small portions of the quilt represent the efforts of the lone worker whose talents and spirit are reflected in a single patch. The patches are stitched together as a community function and form a representative collection greater than the total of the individual parts. Sometimes there may be several hundred patches in one quilt.

Requirements

You are going to create such a quilt representing the combined reading talents of both Ms. Square's and Mr. Hartwell's classes. When you finish reading a book you are to create a "book patch" as described below and then "stitch" it together with all the other patches forming the Frisbie Readers' Quilt. This quilt will be maintained outside the classrooms for all to see, announcing your individual and group successes. You may create and contribute to the quilt as many "book patches" as you can for each book completed this year. It is our goal to have a quilt with at least two thousand patches by the end of the year! For us to be successful, that would be at least eight "book patches" per student. You may use books read in class as well as those assigned outside of class and those used for recreational reading.

Directions

Using the format on the back of this page as a guide, on each "book patch" you are to provide the following:

    title of the book
    your name
    author's name your teacher's name
    number of pages
    language arts period
an evaluation of the book (a grade) if you were the teacher - A, B, C, D, or F
a one or two sentence summary of the book - often called a teaser - which may be continued on the back of the "book patch"
a colored drawing or pattern depicting a major scene from the book

Once each one has been completed to your satisfaction, turn the "book patch" in to your teacher for approval, credit, lamination, and hole-punching. Once laminated and punched for "stitching," the "book patch" will be returned to you for "stitching" together on the community quilt. Only those "book patches" approved by your teacher may be used. Remember, to be successful we need at least eight "book patches" from you.

BE CREATIVE AND HAPPY READING
