Guion S. Bluford, Jr. was born on November 22, 1942 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. As a kid, he was interested in aerodynamics. Into his middle school years he was interested in math and science. That's when he decided to be an aerospace engineer. In high school, counselors told Bluford he wouldn't do well in college. He wanted to prove them wrong. After he enrolled at Penn State University, he then entered the Air Force ROTC. Four years later, he graduated with a bachelor degree and a degree in aerospace engineering. In the Air Force, he got his wings with putting 5,000 hours of jet flight. He then went on to Vietnam. After that, he was chosen by NASA to join up. He went into training for 5 years. He was then assigned a mission with Fred Gregory and Ron McNair. On August 30, 1983 at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on the "Challenger" STS-8 Space Shuttle. The mission was assigned to Bluford and the 5 man crew to deploy a $45 million dollar satellite for the government of India.
