Sarah Breedlove was born in Louisiana in 1876 and lived on a plantation with her parents, Owen and Minerva, and her older brother and sister, Alex and Louvenia. When she was seven years old the yellow fever epidemic swept across the Mississippi and killed her parents. Her older brother was forced to move to Vicksburg to find work and left her older sister to take care of Sarah and keep the farm running. They couldn't do it so Louvenia and Sarah moved to Vicksburg to join their older brother. Louvenia later gat married. Louvenia's husband was mean to Sarah so when she got older she moved out and got married and had a daughter named A'Lelia Walker. She changed her name to Madam CJ Walker. She later went to a public night school for she had no school education when she was little. After her daughter went off to college she invented a hair grower and after showing her product to people she opened a company and became the first black woman to be a millionaire.
