Sally K. Ride was born on May 26, 1951 in Los Angeles. Sally's mother's name is Joyce and works on homemaking. Her father's name is Dale and works on political science professor. She has a sister named Karen. She grew up in Encino, California. Sally went to a private school called Westlake High School in Los Angeles. Sally won a degree in physics and on arts in English. She started college at Swarthmore in Pennsylvania and then went to Stanford University. She became the first American astronaut woman and the third woman to travel in space. Sally's first major job with NASA was as the On-Orbit Capsule Communicator for the missions STS-2 and STS-3. Then she helped the presidential commission appoint to investigate about what made the Challenger's disaster. She flew on Space Shuttle missions on June 18-24, 1983 and Oct. 5-13, 1984. Sally and another astronaut wrote a book. Sally found her husband on the NASA training program and got married with him. She became a professor of physics at the University of San Diego and the director of the Space Institute.
