PROJECT TITLE: Science Fair Project.

PROJECT DATES: 29 January - 11 February 1998. (Original notification to students and parents/guardians was provided in the Fall of 1997.)

PROJECT OBJECTIVES: The learner provided a completed project suitable for presentation in the school and district science fairs; the project followed strict guidelines and the student was responsible for either a scientific experiment or a scientific model; the student's presentation was to be neatly organized and displayed in a uniform manner. (While the Science Fair Project has not previously been considered an Interdisciplinary Project in the classical sense, it is believed that the depth of involvement provided by this team this year necessitates the creation of this approval notice. Considerable classroom and non-class time was devoted to this project and the tremendous rate of student participation and the number of awards to team students indicate the success of this interdisciplinary approach.)

DISCIPLINE INVOLVEMENT:
  • LANGUAGE ARTS: The learner was introduced to library and classroom research techniques and opportunities to include internet, CD-ROM and encyclopedic research; the learner was introduced to the creation of a bibliography; and, the learner was provided opportunities for word-processing of completed reports and allied papers.


  • MATHEMATICS: The learner was introduced to library and classroom research techniques and opportunities to include internet, CD-ROM and encyclopedic research; and, the learner was provided opportunities for word-processing of completed reports and allied papers to include the creation of mathematically valid charts and graphs for the presentation of experimental data.


  • SCIENCE: The learner was introduced to the contributions of science made throughout history and to the scientific method; the learner was instructed in the distinctions between scientific experimentation and the presentation of scientific models; the learner was provided with information regarding the standardization of presenting Science Fair Projects; the learner was provided with in-class research and project creation opportunities.


  • SOCIAL SCIENCE: The learner was introduced to the contributions of other cultures and times throughout history to the field of mathematics and science, and how these various contributions formed building blocks for further advancements; the learner was introduced to library and classroom research techniques and opportunities to include CD-ROM and encyclopedic research; and, the learner was provided opportunities for word-processing of completed reports and allied papers.


  • RSP: Support was provided both RSP and general education students in the research, selection, reading, writing, and word-processing of completed reports. Additionally, classroom time was provided for the actual research and creation of the projects and particular attention was made to the neatness, organization and thoroughness of student presentations.


  • TECHNOLOGY: The library was used individually and collectively over multiple days for selection and research. Internet research, CD-ROM research, graphics creation, color printing, scanning, and word-processing opportunities were provided across several classrooms, the computer classroom, the computer lab, and the library. Additional, non-school hours were provided by several teachers to assist the student in the timely completion of the project.
