Teacher Lesson Plan

Your group will be working through an activity in Glencoe's Interactive Mathematics text (Units 7-12, p. 16) called "Fruit for Thought." There are some properties of numbers that will help you find the solution to this activity. Most helpful are:

  1. The Additive Identity which simply said is:
If you add 0 to any number you will still have that same number as your answer.
  2. The Multiplicative Identity which simply said is:
If you multiply any number by 1 you will still have that same number as your answer.

There are other properties of numbers that you may find useful to know as you study mathematics including:

  1. Commutative Property for Addition
  2. Commutative Property for Multiplication
  3. Distributive Property of Multiplication over Addition
  4. Additive Inverse
  5. Multiplicative Inverse
  6. Closure
Here are some pages from the Math Forum that students might find interesting to read on the different properties.
