Phase 1: Setting the stage

The teacher demonstrates the activity using people cutouts on an overhead projector.

Phase 2: Doing the activity

Part 1: The students work on solving the 3 person puzzle using the textbook as a game board.

Phase 3: Analysis & debriefing

The students share their findings and discuss what they have learned.

"You take the number of moves and multiply it by itself and add the number of people."

  Part 2: The teacher has the students use the computer to do the activity.

The students work on the 3 person puzzle using the Java applet.

The teacher leads the students in a discussion of what happens in the puzzle.

  Part 3: The students organize the information using a table such as this.

The students work to fill in the results after doing the puzzle.
