MARYLAND INSTITUTE COLLEGE OF ART STUDENT PRACTICUMS
http://mathforum.org/geometry/rugs/resources/practicums/
A new section has been added to "Symmetry and Pattern: The
Art of Oriental Carpets," a joint project of The Textile
Museum and The Math Forum.
For a course in Islamic Art History, undergraduates in
Carol Bier's class "Pattern in Islamic Art" dyed textiles,
cut paper, painted, drew, and used graphic software and other
techniques to create artwork demonstrating various kinds of
patterns.
Bier, working with Richard Tchen, has provided pictures of
her students' practicums, plus descriptions of materials and
process, along with an "Artist's Narrative" and "Teacher's
Comment" for each.
Download original materials from Bier's course as Word
documents:

- Reading List

The Exploratorium in conjunction with Caltech's Rubik's Cube
Club will be hosting the International Rubik's Cube
Competition from 10:00 am - 4:30 pm on January 14, 2006.
In past years, many world records have been set at such

- one-handed solve (23.78 seconds)
- blindfold solve (1:58:32)
Among the Rubik's Cube elite expected to attend are Jessica
Fridrich, the creator of the most popular speed cubing
system, the Fridrich Method; Lars Petrus, 4th-place finisher
in the 1982 Rubik's Cube World Championships, representing
Sweden; Shotaro Makisumi, a 14-year-old freshman from Japan
attending high school in Pasadena and number one in the
world of the 3x3x3 Rubik's Cube, average solve at 14.52
