The Park City Mathematics Institute (PCMI) of the Institute for
Advanced Study (IAS) has begun accepting applications for its
three-week residential program taking place in Park City, Utah,
from June 30 - July 20, 2013.
Teachers receive full support and a stipend during the 2013
Summer Session of IAS/PCMI. In addition, 6 quarter-credits of
400-level mathematics are available from the University
of Washington.

Math Girls 2
http://bentobooks.wpengine.com/2012/11/ announcing-math-girls-2-fermats-last-theorem/
Earlier this summer, we highlighted the Kickstarter campaign
for a popular Japanese young adult novel about math. The
translators recently announced the publication date for the
resulting book, titled Math Girls 2: Fermat's Last Theorem.
Continuing Hiroshi Yuki's YA fiction that explores "the beauty
of mathematics, the excitement of tackling hard problems, and
happiness of discussing them with friends," MG2:FLT follows
the mathematical journeys of Miruka, Tetra, and new "math
girl" Yuri. Topics covered include number theory, modular
arithmetic, the basics of abstract algebra (groups, rings, and
fields), proof by contradiction and by infinite descent, and
Euler's identity.
The hardcover, trade paperback, and digital versions hit
shelves Wednesday, 12 December. Until then, freely download the
first two chapters here:

Now taking place: math education conversation of the day
-
"It took me 2 days, but I have a full proof of the method. It
is far more complicated than one would expect. This is because,
as has been pointed out, the method only works if a, b, and c
are relatively prime."

PNC Christmas Price Index
http://www.pncchristmaspriceindex.com/
For the past 29 years, PNC Wealth Management has illustrated
the cost of all the gifts involved in the song "The Twelve
Days of Christmas."
This year, PNC has created a website to track down the gifts,
because they have skipped town! Students go on a virtual trip
across six continents, journey down the Amazon, battle the Loch
Ness monster, and summon ancient Mayan spirits to find the
missing presents. Along the way, PNC's site covers concepts
such as inflation and other economic trends.
PNC's partner, The Stock Market Game™, provides accompanying
lesson plans in English and Spanish:

Of the 12 gifts, six cost the same this year as they did
last year:
-
A Partridge in a Pear Tree
-
Two Turtle Doves
-
Four Calling Birds
-
Eight Maids-a-Milking
-
Nine Ladies Dancing
-
Ten Lords-a-Leaping
