THE CHANCE DATABASE
"I am doing a project on probability and lottery
numbers. For the past two days I have been searching the
WWW for information on this topic, but I have found none."
"I am an 8th grade math teacher in Boston, and I am
developing a series of lessons on how statistics can be
manipulated to show whatever the presenter wants them to
show. However, I have not been very successful in finding
a wide variety of examples of statistical manipulation..."
. . . . . . . . . .
An excellent resource for probability and statistics is the
CHANCE Database:
http://www.geom.umn.edu/docs/education/chance/
If you use the CHANCE database searcher to do a keyword
search for 'lottery' (just the word, not the quotes),
you'll get back lots of items. Here are just a few:
- The lottery - "Birthdays blight hope of lottery
jackpots..."
- Sample topics - Descriptive statistics,
Correlation and Regression, Measurements,
Polls and Surveys...
- Probability articles - Chance of rain, How
numbers can trick you, and many more.
There are also answers to questions about the lottery,
probability, and statistics in our Dr. Math archives.
To look for the keyword 'lottery' use the Searcher at

MATH SOFTWARE ON THE INTERNET
The MATH FORUM has four major areas devoted to math software:
- Math Software ARCHIVES
http://mathforum.org/mathed/math.software.archives.html
The biggest and best sites for finding all kinds of math
software.
- Math Software REVIEWS
http://mathforum.org/mathed/math.software.reviews.html
A short list of sites with mathematics computer software
reviews.
- Math SHAREWARE and FREEWARE (by TOPIC)
http://mathforum.org/shareware/shareware.by.topic.html
Publicly distributed software for algebra, arithmetic,
calculus, geometry, pre-calculus, general math and teaching
aids.
- Commercial PUBLISHERS and VENDORS
http://mathforum.org/mathed/math.commercial.software.html
Links to Web sites that offer popular or noteworthy

If you still don't find what you're looking for in these

AMTE DISCUSSION LIST
The AMTE mailing list, run by the Association of Mathematics
Teacher Educators, has featured an interesting discussion
about integrating a writing assignment on poetry into the
math classroom. Ted Panitz of Cape Cod Community College
in W. Barnstable, Massachusetts began the conversation:
WRITING ASSIGNMENT - THERE IS A POET IN ALL OF US:
"I would like you to write a poem about math. You may use
any form of poetry you wish such as free verse, rhyming,
haiku or any other form you prefer. You may write about
your experiences with math in this class or other classes,
your feelings about math or problems you are having, or
a math problem, if one can be translated into poetry..."
This discussion and others from the AMTE list are archived by
the Math Forum. Since Internet conversations often go off in
several directions under different subject headings, you can
use the Forum's full-text search to identify all of the
relevant threads. In this case select the link at the top of
the archive - 'Search amte' - and enter the keyword 'poet'.
