                     NCTM MEETINGS, EXTENDED

Regional conferences of the National Council of Teachers of
Mathematics (NCTM) just wrapped up in Phoenix and Philadelphia.
More than a dozen speakers have already posted recaps of their
sessions, accompanied by video clips, PowerPoint slides, and
 other content from the events.

In particular, check out the opening sessions, which include
PDFs of Ignite slides, a Sketchnote by Jill Gough, and Storify
stories -- curated compilations of Twitter posts tagged with
the #NCTMregionals hashtag that attendees live-tweeted during
 the sessions:

    - An Evening with the Presidents: Get Ignited about
      Teaching and Learning Mathematics!

    - Inspire, Innovate, IGNITE!

PoW taking place: math problem-solving moment of the week

"But before I started, I wanted to make a prediction.... Once I
saw that, I immediately thought of algebra. And I knew that
the nth minute was any minute, and so it's not what you did
one time, it's the strategy you used to solve the problem."

 - Sophia, highlighted in the Pre-Algebra PoW's Latest Solution

                      2017 MATHEMATICS GAME

Get a jump start on our annual arithmetic challenge!

Gearing up for a twenty-first year, the Math Forum's Year Game
puzzle returns this January. We'll be looking for students to
write expressions for each of the counting numbers 1 through
 100 using

    - the digits in 2017
    - standard operations
    - grouping symbols

Come preview this year's complete rules, worksheet, and
manipulatives now. Starting Sunday, 1 January, 2017,
students may submit solutions, which we'll start displaying
 1 February.

Now taking place: math education conversation of the day

"Thanks @maxmathforum @robertkaplinsky for doing some of my
talking for me to save my voice. Showed videos from each of
 you this morning!"

                 APPLY FOR IAS/PCMI SUMMER 2017

On Tuesday, the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) began
accepting applications for its Teacher Leadership
 Program (TLP).

At the 2017 Summer Session of the IAS Park City Mathematics
 Institute (PCMI), teachers will participate in working groups;
reflect on practice, with special emphasis on inquiry; and take
a course on random matrices that will offer plenty of
interesting mathematics suitable for any grade level.

Thanks to program support provided by Math for America,
participating teachers will receive a stipend during this
residential program, which takes place in Park City, Utah, from
 29 June - 17 July, 2017. Six quarter-credits of 400-level
mathematics are available from the University of Washington.
