                          IGNITE TALKS

What makes us passionate about math education?

Earlier this week, we began posting daily a new
five-minute-long clip of a different Math Forum community
member, each speaking breathlessly about his or her passion
 for math education.

Robert Kaplinsky's video hits YouTube today. More clips are in
 the offing:

    - Anais Arteaga: I Teach Young Mathematicians
    - Liem Tran: Josh Elijah Tran
    - Nanette Johnson: Assumptions
    - Patrick Callahan: Algebra Inferno
    - Lucy West: A More Courageous Way

Check back daily for the next in this series of Ignite talks
from the annual conference of the California Mathematics
 Council South Section (CMC-South).

Don't want to wait? Click a talk's title to download its
corresponding PowerPoint slides or tune in to the complete,
unedited video of the entire session, emceed by Brian Shay:

PoW taking place: math problem-solving moment of the week

"Before I figured out my final strategy, I also tried to use a
chart.... This problem was very hard because it took me such a
long time to find a strategy that worked."

 - Graham, mentioned in the Pre-Algebra PoW's Latest Solution

Read any good blog posts on math teaching this year?

'Tis the season to share: The annual "Best of the Math Teacher
 Blogs" has opened for nominations.

By spring 2017, this crowd-sourced compilation will become
available for sale in e-reader and paperback formats. Proceeds
from last year's "Best of the Math Teacher Blogs" raised
nearly $900 for Twitter Math Camp, the summer residential
program of professional development "by teachers, for
teachers" that was featured in these pages last week.

Now taking place: math education conversation of the day

"Love the daily math talk routine and how it varies from day
 to day ..."

Now to the right of your output will appear icons of orange clouds, labeled "Open Code." Click them to launch notebooks in Wolfram Open Cloud containing the code that generated your output, which you can edit and run, piece by piece using the orange [>] buttons; or change, extend, and then instantly run again on Earlier this autumn, Wolfram's founder blogged about how to teach computational thinking. Anticipating what Open Code now makes possible, his post weaves through a wide array of examples:
