When it first hit app stores at the beginning of the year, Mathpix could take handwritten math that had been photographed on a smartphone, then simplify expressions and solve equations. Earlier this summer, Mathpix developers added Desmos graphing capabilities. By September, developers revealed the algebraic manipulations, step by step, afforded by Mathpix. Over the last few weeks, version 3.0 rolled out, with the ability to— - interpret matrices and piecewise functions; - graph in three dimensions; and - convert handwritten math into typeset digital documents that can then be exported to LaTeX, PDF, and Overleaf. Mathpix is free to download and use. Unlimited scanning costs $19.99 per year. The idea for "snap, solve, graph and go, 2D and 3D" (in the words of one admiring tweet) came to its founder during his graduate studies in Palo Alto. The development team now includes a high school senior and a Stanford professor. They freely provide their LaTeX API on GitHub, and their 3D grapher here: http://grapher.mathpix.com/ -|-\-/-|-\-/-|-\-/-|-\-/-|-\-/-|-\-/-|-\-/-|-\-/-|-\-/-|-\-/-|- Now taking place: math education conversation of the day "Recommended reading for all teachers who teach mathematics and who read about PISA results for school mathematics." - Jerry, posted to the math-teach discussion http://mathforum.org/kb/thread.jspa?threadID=2823969 -|-\-/-|-\-/-|-\-/-|-\-/-|-\-/-|-\-/-|-\-/-|-\-/-|-\-/-|-\-/-|- HOLIDAY STATISTICS FROM THE U.S. CENSUS http://www.census.gov/newsroom/facts-for-features/2016/cb16-ff23.html To commemorate this festive time of year, the U.S. Census Bureau presents some facts and figures about the holidays.
