APRIL TO BE MATH AWARENESS MONTH (MAM)
The Joint Policy Board for Mathematics (JPBM), comprised
of the MAA, AMS, SIAM, and sponsor Texas Instruments Inc.,
announces that Math Awareness Month - formerly Math Awareness
Week - will be observed during the month of April, 1999.
The Web site will once again be hosted by the Math Forum:
http://mathforum.org/mam/
This year's theme is Mathematics and Biology, with essays
on "Mathematics in the Heart" and "Math and DNA"; the 1999
poster depicts the electrical activity of a normal heart
stimulated at a single point.

CONSORTIUM FOR MATHEMATICS AND ITS APPLICATIONS (COMAP)
http://www.comap.com/
COMAP is a non-profit organization developing curriculum
materials and teacher development programs designed to be
multidisciplinary, academically rigorous, and fun to teach
and learn.
COMAP's educational philosophy is centered around mathematical
modeling: using mathematical tools to explore real-world
problems. Its products are developed in print, video, and
multimedia formats, and support the NCTM Standards:
- for college undergraduates: real world mathematics texts,
resources in print, video, and software, and student
contests such as MathServe, which seeks to inspire
collaborative projects that use mathematical skills to
address social, health, or environmental challenges;
MathServe: http://www.comap.com/mathserv.htm
- for grades 9-12, an integrated core curriculum called
Mathematics: Modeling Our World, preparing students for
college-level mathematics and the world of work, with
supplemental teaching resources and professional
development programs;
- for elementary school teachers, an introduction to the
NCTM standards, with an emphasis on curriculum and
professional development.
An electronic catalog for ordering materials is available,
and you can register to receive updates and information.
