PUT THE HEART INTO MATHEMATICS
CARDIAC OUTPUT, RATES OF CHANGE AND ACCUMULATION
Grades 9-12 i-Math Investigations - NCTM
http://Illuminations.nctm.org/imath/912/cardiac/
Students explore the measurement of the amount of blood being
pumped by a heart. The goal of this investigation is a rich
exploration of rates of change and accumulation in context.
As presented here, the measurement is done from a discrete
perspective, but the generalization to a continuous
perspective and use of calculus (integrals) can be easily done.
"Put the Heart into Mathematics" is one of five i-Math
Investigations currently available for Grades 9-12. They are
ready-to-use, online, interactive, multimedia math
investigations including:
- student investigations
- teacher notes
- answers
- related professional development activities
The other four titles for Grades 9-12 include:
- Investigating Linear Relationships: The Regression Line
and Correlation
http://Illuminations.nctm.org/imath/912/LinearRelationships/
- Using Algebra and Discrete Mathematics to Investigate
Population Changes in a Trout Pond
http://Illuminations.nctm.org/imath/912/TroutPond/
- Shedding Light on the Subject: Function Models of
Light Decay
http://Illuminations.nctm.org/imath/912/Light/
- Whelk-Come to Mathematics: Using Rational Functions to
Investigate the Behavior of Northwestern Crows
http://Illuminations.nctm.org/imath/912/Whelk/
Each of these activities has a student version that can also
be downloaded to use offline.

LIBRARY OF PROBLEMS OF THE WEEK
http://mathforum.org/library/problems/
In response to teachers' requests, the Math Forum has
re-organized its hundreds of archived Problems of the Week to
make them easier to browse and search.
Our new Library of Problems of the Week categorizes past PoWs
according to mathematics topics and story topics. The PoW
Library also offers ratings of difficulty levels of problems:
