Dates / Schedule

On four days throughout the 2013-2014 school year, each team of students and their teacher coaches will convene on the Drexel campus for an afternoon of competition. Four components constitute the Philadelphia EMC:

  1. All eight students will create and present a video that shows a Three Act Math Task. The video, modeled after those created by Dan Meyer, will set up a real- world problem, provide ideas about solving the problem, and then settle upon a solution to the problem.
  2. Two students will present a written solution to a Problem of the Week created by The Math Forum at Drexel. Students will have worked together to generate a solution to the problem prior to the competition and will then share their ideas with an audience.
  3. Six students will participate in an Engineering Solutions Event that requires hands-on design and data collection. The subject of the challenge will not be available prior to competition. Background information will be provided at the competition to guide students. Students will use their designs and data to make predictions and generate a mathematical model.
  4. All eight students will solve problems as part of a Quiz Bowl. Students will work together to answer questions and compete head to head against other teams.
