Small rug
Turkey, Konya
19th century

The Textile Museum 1978.10
Gift of Phyllis Kane
137 x 91 cm

With long pile and a very low knot density, this small rug has a deceptively simple pattern. There is a lot of subtlety in the use of color and play with pattern. Color alternation brings out rotational symmetry in each eight-pointed star. For the background colors, the sequence in each row is offset by one, which creates diagonal color banding across the field.
