Complicated patterns based upon geometric relationships were favorite choices
for architectural ornament and decorative arts from the 14th century onwards
in the Islamic world. This pattern of eight-pointed stars and polygons set
within a square grid is also found in inlaid wood and carved stone ornament.
All such geometric patterns may be constructed simply using a compass and
ruler although they appear to be very complicated.
Within the stars and polygons, there are many varieties of floral ornament
based upon reflection and rotation. The overall symmetry of the central field
shows reflections along both horizontal and vertical axes, combined with
glide reflections.
