Bag face or trapping
Central Asia, Turkmenistan (Tekke)
Late 19th century

L1996.54.1
MADAVASK Collection
15 x 30 inches

Notice the border patterns in this small bag face. In both the top and bottom borders, and the side borders, the same design with color alternation is repeated on a white ground. But the symmetry of these border patterns is different. In the side borders, there is a single axis of reflection, whereas in the top and bottom borders, there are multiple axes of reflection.

Various formats of Turkmen rugs are designed to meet the requirements of specific functions such as the transport or storage of particular objects. No matter what purpose or shape, Turkmen rugs carry designs and patterns that help to define and distinguish different rug styles.

The decoration of this bag face or trapping is related to objects in other formats. The three panels with stylized leaf-like medallion on a white ground, along with other stylistic and technical features, suggest a late 19th century date.
