Sometimes, variations of a pattern occur within one rug. In this example, the
top border pattern utilizes glide reflection of a unit formed by three
stylized curly leaves, whereas in the side borders, the unit of repeat has
five stylized leaves.
The format of this rug was designed to surround a door frame, providing a
decorative entry to a circular Turkmen tent known in the West as a yurt.
The stylized curly leaves here are more regularized than in earlier weavings,
suggesting a 19th century date. Stylistic and technical features also
suggest that this object may be ascribed to Tekke production, which drew upon
Salor tribal traditions in Central Asia.
