Symmetry of Rugs

Gallery of Student Work

Talk to your students about symmetry, asymmetry, and symmetry-breaking in Oriental carpets. Discuss these building blocks of pattern -- in nature and in art. Follow some of our suggestions for student activities.

Student Work from The Park School

After a one-hour session of discussion and seeing slides of Oriental carpets, the students in Anne Fogg's fourth-grade class at The Park School (Brooklandville, MD), each designed a rug using graph paper and colored pencils.

ALL ARE INVITED to submit student-produced images or reports. If your students have created some exceptional work related to this exhibit, please contact the authors - we'd love to feature it on our site.
