This has been called "Russian multiplication"
and "Peasant multiplication", and I am sure
it has really been used by either some Russians
or some peasants (or both, of course).

However, I'm rather inclined to doubt the
more detailed stories about it, because people
are inclined to romanticize, and because the
earlier the references, the sparser the details.
