Of course the prime current example of this transliteration formula is
the attempts to change Socrates to Sokrates.

German underwent a stylistic change about 1870 in which the letter c was
rendered almost non-existent; some attempts still persist in changing
Carl Gauss to Karl Gauss, but anyone who has seen any of his surviving
autographs knows full well that he apparently never used Karl.

Does anyone know about Jacob Steiner or Jakob? I have never seen an
autograph or publication directly, and am very curious.
