I'm surprised that no one has yet recommended
Robert Merton, On the Shoulders of Giants,
now available in paperback as a 'Shandean postscript' to the
post-Italianate Edition of the book, with Forewords and Afterworlds,
Prefaces and Postfaces, by everyone, University of Chicago Press,
Paperback, 1993,
A dazzling and witty discussion of the topic. Read and enjoy!
