Dear David Henderson and Barney Hughes,

Thank you for your information about the cubic equation.

In Japanese traditional mathematics (Wasan), the cubic
equation was solved by the Horner method (Ruffini mehod),
for example 5^{1/3}=1.7099 (x^3-5=0).
The Horner method was already known to the author of the
Chinese treatise "Nine Chapter of the mathematical Art"
(around 1st Century).

I think the Horner method is very natural method, but in
Europe the method was not used until 19th century.
WHY?
The method is easier than Omar method, geometric techniques
by intersecting constructed conics.
