Re: Using the Internet and WWW in the math classroom

I am in the second semester of teaching a developmental math course (i.e. a modified Algebra I) over the internet using my own printed materials, a textbook (Elementary Algebra, Johnson & Steffensen), videos from the textbook company, presentations designed on Persuasion and then transferred to video, and teacherstudent communication by email, fax, speaker phone and the occasional snail mail.
The original design of the course required students to meet in small groups as well as work independently. When the small groups have achieved interdependence and consistent attendance, this class has been very successful. When the small groups have not succeeded, only those students who I think could have taken any independent study/correspondence course have succeeded. These students are often reentering college after a considerable absence from school, they are "nontraditional", working and many have families.
Another professor here has set up a WWW page and is teaching an innovative college algebra course using Mathematica and a text called "Earth Algebra". My class will be added to the WWW page in the fall. We also will have Finite Math online this fall and hope to add calculus soon. We hope to serve not only adults but also high school students in small rural schools who do not have the opportunity to accelerate into higher mathematics.
Its a lot of work. Using our format you absolutely must type well, be able to communicate effectively using email (which means you have to be able to "push your personality" in your replies to your students) and you have to come up with ways to establish group interdependence at your outreach sites.
But it is also exciting because we are opening doors to people in rural Idaho who had no access to higher education.
