Aside from the much heavier social problems today, is there any
declination of the math background of today's math teachers on
average? If there is, is this owing to the "new math" experiment
several decades ago? social struture change ( we used to have a lot of
very smart and devoted female math teachers )? or the idea that one
needs only good pedogogy without expertise in math?

Just wondering...
