Not much of an advice, but as someone having _a lot_ of similar experience
both in the narrower sense of not-to-be-proud-of assignments and in the
wider sense of statistical consulting in academic setting for people neither
understanding statistics nor wanting to learn statistics while insisting on
extensively using statistics (previously at a psychology department, now at
a faculty of medicine), I can only tell you I will save your message as
providing a very sensible "algorithm"!
