I have just finished reading "Beyond Arithmetic" by several of the authors of the Investigations curriculum. I highly recommend it, especially if you are new to Investigations. It touches on many aspects and concerns. Also, this month's issue of Teaching Children Mathematics has a thought provoking article on the issue of teaching children math facts.
