I agree with Nancy that rubrics are valuable when developed for a particular piece of work. Even when using an assessment piece from one year to the next I find the rubric changes with a different math experiences.
I have worked with student created rubrics and have found that to be very beneficial for my students. When they develop and evaluate work they develop a much deeper understanding of the math and of the skills needed to communicate mathematically.
