Keeping an eye on the big idea is important. I think it's also
important to help the students keep an eye on it as well. If the big
idea of a unit is made clear to them and they're reminded of it
(overtly and covertly) as the unit progresses, then they'll have a
better handle on what they're doing and why they're doing it. This can
help them make sense of what's going on.
