Good assessment activities to see where they are

I have a group of special needs students, grades 2 to 5, who are
pulled out of the classroom to work with me twice a week for 30
minutes in math. Our school is using Investigations but has not
purchased me any of the materials! The program seems terrific (I went
to a one-day overview training) and I want to be as consistent with
what they're doing in class as possible. Right now, I would like to
assess where my students are in math and what they can do, and then
I'll develop a plan for each student from there. Can anyone recommend
good activities from Investigations units for this "see where they
are" purpose? I can borrow units from teachers if I just know what to
ask for. Thanks.
