Assessment is a very difficult task, no matter what type we use. I tend to be cautious of the amount of assessing, watching when to assess and when to teach. If assessment is built into the curriculum, a teacher can teach and assess at the same time. We have developed a rubric for the last unit in kindergarten "how Many in all'. I tried using it at the end of the year, as did 4 other teachers in my district. I worked in small groups of 6 children using the last activity as a guide. This one assessment demonstrated many mathematical concepts that I was not prepared to observe and others I knew I was looking for. I found this interesting, sometimes we tend to be focusing so hard on one or two concepts we forget to see the big picture. I would like to work on something similar for all units.
