Sounds like you were never even taught
the basics. I was one of those kids
in the top 1% in the 70s that went to
MIT, and the old methods suited me fine.

Most science and engineering problems
are a matter of straightforward applications
of methods, _not_ higher order thinking.

If you have to do a lot of thinking,
you probably were never taught the way
to solve the problem.
