Because..When i questioned this method, I was given papers on the NCTM
Standards.
examples: Eight pennies are placed in a row on a tabletop. Every other
coin is then replaced with a nickel. Every third coin is then replaced
with a dime. Finally, every fourth coin is replaced with a quarter.
What is the value of the 8 coins now on the table?

At a ball game, there were 2 empty seats for every 3 occupied ones in
a section of bleachers. How many seats were empty if there were 25
seats in that section?

At school there is a circular track with 6 flags spaced around it an
equal distance apart. At the race yesterday, the 3 fastest runners
lined up at the finish line facing the first flag, and started to race
all the way around the track. Susan took 30 seconds to get to flag
number 2. How long did it take her to get all the way around the track
if she kept up the same pace?
