I looked up the term in my dictionary, and found this: ------ 2.Biology. a.The theory that groups of organisms, as species, may change with passage of time so that descendants differ morphologically and physiologically from their ancestors. b.The historical development of a related group of organisms. ------ It's not uncommon for popular definitions to vary from more technical formulations in the professional literature. But are Doug's definition and the dictionary definition fundamentally the same?
