Well, A.Wiles' extremely long proof (ca. 150 pgs, plus Taylors' paper of some 20 pgs, filling the complete May'95 issue of Math.Annals /Princeton press) did not deter me from persuing a shorter proof (16 pgs), recently published in the Acta Matematica of the Univ. of Bratislava (nov'05) as "Additive structure of the group of units mod p^k, with Core and Carry concepts for extension to integers", see: http://pc2.iam.fmph.uniba.sk/amuc/_vol74n2.html (pp 169184)
NB: In fact, my inital paper was concurrent with his, in 1995 (though his initial paper was announced in 1993, with an approach that I figured could not work, using a spectral residue technique with Lspectra & induction on the primes, which blocks due to Hensel's lemma the transfer from residues to integers). ... I sent him and Nick Katz the above link (but no response;) Ciao, NB.
