Introduced in 1893 by Karl Pearson for the statistical distribution also
known as 'gaussian', an even earlier use was by C.S.Peirce in 1873. See
H.A.David and A.W.F.Edwards, Annotated Readings in the History of
Statistics (2001) p210.
