That fiction is what makes electrons flow from the photoelectric effect. The energy of the electrons is proportional to the -frequency- of the impinging photons. It ain't waves. With waves the imparted energy is independent of the frequency and equal to the square of the amplitude.
Photons are as real as electrons, protons, neutrons and nutrinos.
-None- of which have ever been seen by human beings.
