Not a useless exercise if it leads to better understanding by others.
Now, if some mathematical "proof" or exercise leads to a contradiction of accepted mathematics, then it would be useless, or at least paradoxical until someone resolved it.
Same with the twin paradox in relativity. Oh, how some people cannot figure that out, and so they can't or won't accept the explanation from physicists. You should see Dirk Van de moortel's webpage called Immortal Fumbles. Very funny.
