Here you go: http://nysalgebrareview.pbwiki.com/Keyboard+Shortcuts (There is also Neal's corresponding MSWord file in the File Upload section if you want to download it.) If anyone has more to add, go ahead and add it! fwiw, keyboard shortcuts can also save you tons of time in MathType/Equation Editor (the keyboard shortcut pops up at the bottom when you mouse over the button) ctrl-F fraction ctrl-H superscript ("High") ctrl-L subscript ("Low") ctrl-R square root ctrl-G (letter) greek letter (so for pi type ctrl-g p, for theta type ctrl-g q) ctrl-9 expandable parentheses ctrl-[ expandable brackets ctrl-M 2 2x2 matrix ctrl-M 3 3x3 matrix ctrl-M N new matrix dialog box Kate

Yes you can do this in other applications but the commands do not carry over. So customizing in Word will not work in Excel. There are, of course, some that are specific to certain applications. I have also found it useful to use more of the existing ctrl and alt functions. For example if when working on a diagram, you type ctrl+g, then s (with out the control key) you can turn the snap to grid function on and off without ever leaving the keyboard. Handy time savers. Try some of the same approaches in equation editor. They are huge time savers.
I used to use the buttons approach until I discovered the keyboard shortcuts. Using the keyboard helped remove some of the toolbar clutter.
Send me your email and I will send along the sample cheat sheet that I use for a continuing ed computer class I teach.

Thanks for the shortcuts!!! I didn't know about the Alt ones. Do they work in all applications??
I have my Office toolbars all customized. I add the buttons for superscript, subscript, insert symbol, insert equation to the formatting section with the italic and bold buttons.
To do this I go to tools/customize/ then I click on the commands tab and find the buttons I want and drag them to my toolbar.
Most of the school computers also have the buttons added, because it's the first thing I do when I sit down at a new station. :)

>>> "Westendorf, Neal" <nwestendorf@taconichills.k12.ny.us> 2/26/2008 8:22 AM >>> I find it easier to customize my keyboard for the special characters that I use frequently. Click on your toolbar > customize > commands > keyboard > then select the command you want and the alt or ctrl combination you want to use for that particular function. Keeping a cheat sheet is very helpful until you recall where they are. Be careful to not delete some combination that you actually want to keep but there are many already included that I never use so changing them is no big deal.

I noticed a couple questions typed with squared symbols as x^2
Here are some alt characters that are worth putting on a sticky attached to the bottom of your monitor (til you've typed them so many times, you have them memorized.)
Alt 0215 is the multiplication sign: ×
(hold down the Alt key while you type in 0215)
Alt 0247 division: ÷
Alt 241 plus or minus: ±
Alt 247 approximately equal: ?
Alt 60 less than: <
Alt 62 greater than: >
Alt 242 greater than or equal: ?
Alt243 less than or equal: ?
Alt 251 square root ?
Alt 0178 squared, as in 6²
Alt 0179 cubed, ³
(Here's my favorite) Alt 248 degree sign °
Fortunately, the number of Alt codes doesn't -> ?
:>Þ
A more complete list can be found here:

Some of you may have already done so, and if you're not afraid of more "advanced" tricks, you can simply map many of these to your keyboard for use in applications such as Word. i.e. when I need to type something squared, I simply hit <ctrl> 2. It's pretty convenient.

Good morning!
To date, I have received 48 requests to share review sheets. What I am asking everyone to do is to upload their review sheets to Kate Nowak's wiki page, located at:
http://nysalgebrareview.pbwiki.com <http://nysalgebrareview.pbwiki.com/> <http://nysalgebrareview.pbwiki.com/> /
Follow the instructions on the page to upload files. Should you need the invite key, it's coffee.
Try to keep it to 16 questions - 10 MC, 2 each 2,3, and 4 point constructed response. Those 16 questions are also broken down by content strand:
7 Algebra
3 Geometry
3 Statistics
2 Number Sense
1 Measurement
Kudos to Kate once again for setting this up! And thanks to all who have already or will be contributing to this.
