Dear All,
Attached is a flyer for what is expected to be a great workshop that looks at the connections between math and art taking place at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. I know one of the workshop facilitators (Sunita Vatuk) as she works on a research team with me and I can honestly say that she is both a mathematician and an artist who tries to find true connections between the two (not merely superficial ones). The workshop is geared for HS and MS teachers. I would definitely recommend it. --Lidia G
Some info follows (more is in the attachment). Please distribute to anyone you think would like to attend.
Art looks at Math; Math looks at Art; Both look at the World August 1, 2008 10am 4pm A joint workshop with The Museum of Modern Art and MetroMath at the Graduate Center, CUNY. This workshop is designed for math teachers who are interested in learning new strategies for bringing art into the math classroom. Using works of art from MoMA¹s collection, this workshop explores the ways in which we can use observation and literacy skills in looking at art and apply those skills to mathematical objects. The workshop will take place at the Museum of Modern Art, in the Museum¹s galleries and the Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Education and Research . Through close observation, guided discussion and hands-on activities, we will explore the use of inquiry- and observation-based teaching strategies and their application to math topics and curriculum.
