Below is how I would explain it to a student who is about 5th grade mathematically. A more advanced student probably would be able to do it alone.

Adding from left to right we first add 8 and -10 -2 + 6 - 20
next we add -2 and 6 4 - 20
finally we add 4 and -20 -16
The only difficulty is students who don't know left from righ or up from down.
