I've been using Xnews for quite a few years. I think it was free. I was having trouble once and switched to Forte/Agent something, and it seemed to be essentially the same, and I had the same trouble, so I switched back. It's easy to killfile (permanently or temporarily) various posters. It's a little harder to learn to use the "scoring" system, to create more sophisticated filters.
These news readers won't work with Google (as far as I know) so you do need access of some sort.
