Here is a good section on this topic...

It is from "Randomization tests" by Eugene S. Edgington, Section 1.3
p. 6-8. A good bit of that section is available through Google books.
I was able to access it here, if this looong URL works. If not, try
a Google search for ""Randomization Tests and Nonrandom Samples". The
Google book was my first result.
