A lot of (U.S.) 6th graders I've dealt with are going to have trouble when you throw 'X' and 'F' (the use of symbols) at them (although they shouldn't, but trust me, many will) and not know what "pairing" means (and maybe not even know what the word "pair" means). Those still in a very concrete operations stage are going to think they have to connect two objects with a string or draw a line through two objects in the process of making a function!
