"Read about Marva Collins, Geoffrey Canada, Kipp Schools, to know that this can be done classroom and school-wide."
The Collins school closed in 2008 due to lack of funding and enrollment, and I was unable to find any actual data to verify any claims, although it probaly had results because it required the parents to choose. It is hard to gauge the Harlem School program because the numbers are obfuscated. In some instances they give percentages, in other instances they give numbers. And when they give numbers the numbers are on a very small scale, like in the 10's. Kind of lilke what you do when you extrpolate several personal student experiences to the whole population.
The Kipp model seems the best. It requires the parents to choose and it offers quality education. We will have to watch it in high school and beyond. I would be most sold if they did well on the Achieve algebra exam. Or if their SAT scores were adequate. Telling me that 99% of the students go to college means NOTHING anymore. Especially after that Stanford school reported that 96% of its students went to college yet the average SAT score was sub 800! But it didn't take the Stanford school debacle to open my eyes to the "college" scam. That came earlier.
