Yet we still have a bit to go before you can send a photo to a computer and a man and say "point to the tree" and have the computer win. The fuzzy logic filter of our brain more than compensates for our slow "processor cycle time."
Also, it has never been shown that man has finite memory. In fact, I remember a book of psychology about a man who could never forget. He could remember everything with amazing detail. It made it impossible for hims to sleep. He eventually found a way to cope and made his living as a professional <insert word that means memory man here... mnumenist or something>.
And programming chess AI is a difficult task. You not only have to account for many levels of possible moves, but you also have to devise a "perfect" way to evaluate position. Many people believe that such a "perfect" evaluation algorithm does not exist. In that respect, even if Deep Blue wins and plays as champion in the future, man can still beat the machine.
