Hmm. And Charlie Parker died of a WHAT kind of overdose?
More seriously, it is a pathetic lie on the part of Mr. Billingsley to assert that Alfie Kohn opposes "high standards." This is the classic linguistic trick many opponents of NCTM Standards-based education are fond of using. The fact is that Mr. Kohn, myself, and many others are opposed to the way in which the mantra of high standards is used for political purposes. Neither I nor, I believe, Alfie Kohn, opposes having high expectations for all students. But using that phrase as a simplistic slogan is meaningless. One can chant it and write it all one likes. Doing so changes nothing. And pointing that fact out, apparently, makes one a pariah in some circles, one who is feared so greatly that s/he must be consistently lied about. So be it. Even the biggest liars are generally caught and stopped.
Since today is the last day people can make irresponsible, inflammatory, libelous claims on this list without fear that a moderator will block them from promulgating such lies and ad hominem attacks, I expect to see a further flood of such filth from the usual suspects. I, for one, will simply wait until we're past the point where free expression of ideas is met with open hostility and covert mischief. After today, the mad dogs will be silent in this particular quarter.
